Terms Of Sale/Shipping
www.brokenspokespuppies.com
SHIPPING- Shipping can be especially stressful on some puppies and we require that you get your puppy to a vet within 72 hours after receiving them, so make your vet appointments before the puppy ever gets to you. We do everything on our end that can be done to avoid any problems prior to them leaving, but once in a while a puppy will stress more than others and can be treated very easily by a vet if done in the first 72 hours. Our puppies are shipped by air. There may situations when shipping by air that unexpected delays happen and rescheduling may be necessary; an example is if temperatures do not meet the criteria to safely ship the puppy due to extreme heat/cold prohibiting puppy's flight. In order to avoid this, we ask that you have a second choice of airports for alternate arrivals in case temps are too hot/cold they have the information to re-route. When shipped by air, please be aware that flights can be cancelled by airlines, and ARE rescheduled by our shippers for the next soonest available flight; delays are also a possibility. We all do our best to see your puppy is safely shipped to you on the day scheduled. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated. PLEASE NOTE: If you pick up your puppy from our facility, prices do not include a travel crate, you will need to bring your own to transport your puppy. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via email or phone, 417-259-0552. Thank you for considering one of our puppies! Robin Hurt of Broken Spoke Kennels June 19th, 2007

Description: June 16th, 2006
To the customers of Broken Spoke Kennels,
My name is Scott Rhodes from Wilmington, N.C.
I have been in retail for the last 30 years, and have met thousands of people. And as we all know, there are all kinds in this world, and I've pretty much met them all. Some are easy to deal with, some impossible, with the majority in between.
Robin Hurt of Broken Spoke Kennels is as fine a person as I have ever met.
She is a country girl, which means she has country values: honesty, sincerity, concern, and caring.
I recently was in the market for a Bichon, and like you, surfed the net. I was a bit concerned, because the Bichons around here are going for 15 to 1800 dollars, and you aren't guaranteed one; you must be "interviewed" to see if you are well-healed enough to own one.
Now I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth, my daddy taught me how to work for a living, and needless to say, I wasn't sure if I would, and certainly didn't care, about "qualifying." And I sure as heck didn't want to spend that kind of money. So, like you, I went looking, and found Robin, and boy, I'm here to tell you, my problems were over.
What a pleasant, honest person, no attitude, just can't do enough to help you, and goes the extra mile. My first question to her was, how come these other dogs are so high, and yours are so reasonable? "That's because I don't believe in charging high prices, I don't think people should have to pay that much." Wow! Her female was expecting, and she picked our pup as soon as he was born. He went to the vet at seven weeks, had all of his shots, was neutered, and sent to us via Pet Air. And boy oh boy, what a beautiful puppy!
He is a happy, healthy little white butterball, loves people, loves to play, and such a great personality! After seeing him and being around him, I assure you that I would have paid $2,000.00 to have the pleasure of his companionship. We are absolutely thrilled with the quality of this dog, he is perfect in every way, our expectations we not only met, but overwhelmingly exceeded.
Yes, you can pay more, but there is no need to, unless you're buyng "status" and not man's best friend. This letter I am writing for the world to see, because of a great life experience. Feel free to e-mail me, gran398@yahoo.com, or call me, 910-763-6616. Enjoy your beautiful new puppy from Broken Spoke Kennels!!
Sincerely,
Scott Rhodes

Description: Hi Robin,
Our vet checked Zeke out today and was very impressed with you as a breeder. He said that you definitely know what you are doing with the shots and your worming schedule records. He was also impressed with your vet and the letter that she sent home with you stating when Zeke's surgery was and what was removed. He feels that you are an honest breeder and that you have high standards for your dogs. He liked that you were honest with what needed to be fixed on Zeke and paid for it. We are very lucky that you take your job seriously and keep good records. We really appreciate it.
Zeke is doing great! He's a little lover. I carry him around almost all day. I love it how he lays on his back like a baby. Tonight, I went over to my friends house with him to play with her puppy, he was soooo excited. He has been snuggling with all of us. What a great dog. We are so happy with him! Potty training is going good also.
Thanks so much.

Description: Hi Robin,
I had Thelma (now Sophie) vet checked today. She checked out perfectly. The vet really liked her and asked where I had found her. I looked up some of her lineage on the web and one of her grandparents was the top stud
Dog in all of the UK. She is really sweet and extremely laid-back. I don't care for dogs in the house, but guess where she is! She picks a spot in the room (usually somewhere around my feet), sits and behaves herself. She really likes to lay under my computer desk while I am working. She loves taking a shower! My husband really likes her as well, as she is not hyper at all.
I occasionally have customers that want a particular dog, and I don't have one at the time, I generally refer them to a westie breeder in Joplin, but I will add your kennel to my list for future customers.
Thanks for all,
Ellen

Description: Hi Robin,
Thank you so much for our Westie girls Robin. We can certainly see these pups were loved to bits at your place and well cared for. The sweetness and spunkiness of these Westie girls is typical of a true Westie. We have 3 young children and they all bonded immediately.
We can't believe how beautiful these puppies are! Snow white coats, short carrot tails, perfect ears, nice round rumps, boxy little bodies, big front paws, etc. They are cuter than the pups you see in magazines!
We are so thankful you paper train your younger puppies. It is making house training much easier for us. The pups already sleep the entire night in their kennel without accidents!
Our family truly appreciated the sweet pictures and emails you sent us while we were waiting for the time our pups were old enough to fly up to Canada. Now that we have had our pups for almost 2 months, you still communicate and encourage us with our Westie girls.
We will definitely recommend anyone looking for a Westie pup to contact you first.

Name: The Chronicles Of Ozzie-to Be Continued...
Created On: 05.01.07 12:00 pm
Description: 3/30/07-Hi Robin! Ozzie (or that #$%^& little ankle-biter) as he is known around our house, is doing well. He hasn't quite figured out that outdoors is better for certain things than indoors, but he knows the front door is the way out and likes to use it. He is definitely all-Terrier - loves to dig in the flower beds, eat dirt and chase worms (and cats, even though they are 4 times his size). We are all wearing shoes in the house now since bare feet are obviously just mobile dog food. One question - how much should an 8 week old pup eat? He's a very dainty eater - not picky, but strickly one piece at a time. He just doesn't seem to eat much. Still hasn't finished the bag you sent home with him. Tons of energy (and teeth) though! Love him to death, teeth and all.
4/16/07-Hi Robin. Just a note to let you know that Ozzie continues to thrive - he's gained almost two pounds in a very short time, done serious damage to one chair rung and a couple of feline egos, and made himself an indespensible part of the household. He is still chewing on anything that doesn't chew back, but may (repeat, may) be improving slightly in that department - at least he stops momentarily when someone yells at the top of their lungs to STOP!!!!! The house breaking is still going well - he's definitely a smart little so-in-so. The funniest part is his morning routine. When we open the kennel first thing in the morning, instead of charging out and looking for the nearest spot to relieve himself (as I would do), he often just yawns and rolls over, sometimes staying in there for another 5 or 10 minutes. Eventually, with enough encouragement, he will drag himself out, stretch several times, and waddle to the door. This morning, after a quick visit outside, he curled up in my lap as I had breakfast and went back to sleep. He's becoming a champion lap dog! Anyway, you can't have him back! Cheers! Dave.
4/25/07-Ozzie, aka "Devil Dog" or "Super Pooper" is still alive but another day like yesterday and, according to my soon-to-be-former spouse ("if he keeps this up"), he may end up stuffed and curled up on the hearth like those "puppies" you can buy in the pet store! I was safely at work, but supposedly not-so-little Oz barked continuously throughout the day, stopping only long enough to bite her whenever she got near him. He also threw his empty food and full water dishes all around the house, terrorized any cat that ventured down stairs, growled and snarled at shadows (including his own), and generally made her want to abandon both him and the house. He's nearly 7 pounds (up to 75% of his weight in one month) and, despite being a "total pain," is still loved or at least tolerated by all. The vet agrees that he should stopping biting eventually but that "it will get worse before it gets better, thanks to teething." (sigh) There's no doubt that he's a Terrier - digging into and under anything he can reach and pulling out grass in great clumps (his particular favorite). He also eats spiders, worms, (a favorite), and bees (but only once). Oh, and cat food - he LOVES cat food. In fact, he may be part cat! He can jump much higher than his size and short legs would indicate, and once on the couch or chair, he takes great delight in climbing as high as he can reach - and then jumping off! He sailed off the back patio (a drop of about 4 feet) by accident, and then ran around the end and jumped off again and again until I stopped him. My spouse thinks he's actually somewhat deranged and she may be right! His funniest trick is what we call the "low butt run" in which he - for no particular reason - tucks his tail between his legs and runs as fast as he can (which is very fast) around and around the house - over, under and through anything that gets in his way. He does this until he can't breath anymore or until he feels the need to bite someone, which ever comes first. The good news is that despite a host of other negative traits, he seems to have gotten the hang of house training - barking even louder than usual to go out and hasn't had an "accident" for two weeks. If he survives another month, he goes to the vet for the big "fix." I'll keep you posted (despite my many puppy teeth scars). :-) Dave.
4/26/07-Hi Robin! The Oz-monster, as my granddaughters call him, began his day by trying to eat a 10-inch nightcrawler he dug out of the front yard. It was so big I thought it was a baby snake! The dog just loves worms!
One of the most amazing things we've noticed so far is his ability to learn and repeat patterns. It took only once or twice for him to learn about standing to one side while a door swings open before trying to charge through. (I've had dogs that would repeatedly knock them selves senseless trying to get through the door.) One morning, I put him on my lap and brushed him while I watched the news. Once. Now it's his must-have, first thing routine every morning. Sometimes he curls up an goes to sleep after being brushed, and sometimes he tries to chew on me, the brush, my newspaper, and the edge of the kitchen table. Sigh.
Rambunctious is a huge understatement! He attacks his toys with wild abandon, often rolling head-over-heels. But there is one thing he hasn't learned - yet. He has grown so much that he no longer fits under some of the furniture but that doesn't occur to him as he runs at full speed and tries to duck under chairs, etc. The clunk makes my head hurt, but doesn't seem to phase him.
I have no problem with your using my photos on the website. I'm planning on shooting some more this weekend, if I can crank the camera up fast enough to keep up with him!
Cheers! Dave
05/02/07- Ozzie's world expanded this week. Up until now, he was confined to the kitchen/breakfast/hallway areas (all hardwood floors) using low gates and a couple of natural barriers to include a large wicker basket where we keep newspapers for recycling. On Monday, Kathy heard a tearing sound and discovered not-so-little Oz happily sitting in the basket tearing up and eating newspapers. Since he can get in it, he can also get over it and from there, have the run of the house. Since he seems to be housebroken (already!), she moved the barriers around and allowed him into the rest of the first floor of the house. That means he can chew on the philodendron by the fireplace, chase surprised cats, and sleep in the middle of the coffee table (photo to follow). He's definitely part cat - I never saw an animal with such short legs that can jump and climb like Oz! I caught him working his way over an expandable gate, so it's a good thing he's housebroken! Gotta run. Cheers! Dave
05/04/07-Good morning, Robin. As promised, attached are a couple of photos of the Oz-monster (emphasis on the monster part!). In the first shot, he looks cute and innocent. The larger photo includes the partially eaten philodendron on the hearth, and the photo album on the lower shelf of the coffee table (Ozzie's favorite nap location) that he chewed the corners off of. Not shown are the two large coffee table books (including my prized NASCAR book) and the large family Bible that he virtually destroyed. As my spouse says, it's a good thing he's cute! Cairn-acide has been mentioned! Cheers! Dave
05/07/07-Ozzie had a good weekend-meaning he didn't get into any particular trouble. He's learned to sit and beg on command, is working on shaking paws, but still ignores "come" unless it's his idea or there's a treat involved. He goes absolutely ape over "snausages" puppy treats. The very mention of "woofy" has him literally dancing around the room. Gotta run....
05/10/07-All heck broke loose yesterday in the Kingdom of Oz! You didn't tell me he was part mountain goat! Not so little Oz (all 8+ pounds of him) climbed over one of the 30-inch high gates we had at strategic places to keep him out of the second floor and away from the cats. Kathy discovered this when she heard the ruckus that followed when Oz surprised not one but two blissfully sleeping cats (both nearly twice his size) in their formerly safe haven. Now that he knows he can go over the gates, there are no limits (unless we catch him in the act). It's a good thing he's so cute!
June 19, 2007-Ozzie was unbelievably good throughout the trip. He is the most adaptable pup I've ever seen! He readily accepted 6 or 7 hours in the car, napping in his cage (his usual big wire cage from the house) 99% of the time. He woofed once every 3 or 4 hours to go out and then waited (more or less) patiently for us to find a rest stop. In the hotels, he was perfectly comfortable (and quiet). His only trauma occurred when he was introduced to my sister's two Shih Tzus and one shepherd-husky cross. They were fine, but Ozzie went absolutely bonkers, tearing around like he was possessed.
June 20-Today is his "big day" at the vet (although he probably won't think so). Hopefully, he will come home a bit less aggressive in his mindless pursuit of the felines in the house. The cyst on his neck that I mentioned before apparently was related to a vaccination because over the past few days, it has gone from marble to pea-size and seems to be disappearing. He will also get his nails clipped while he is out as that is the only way that's going to happen. The Oz-monster remains 100% house broken and continues to get lighter in color. He has the weirdest marking on his tail - kind of a white or light gray flash - just on his tail. He also has the longest ears anyone has ever seen on a Cairn, and he uses them in the most expressive ways you can imagine. My spouse probably wouldn't part with him, despite some of his antics. I say, "probably" because he does have his moments when I'm not around. Updated photos eventually. See ya. Dave
We think the jack rabbit look suits him just fine and hope they stay longer than normal. He uses them like signal flags, and you can instantly tell when he feels guilty about something!
Oz came through his big day with flying colors and once again proved what a unique little being he is. You wouldn't know anything had happened to him - in fact, our biggest problem last night was keeping him from tearing around the house like the demon he normally is! His biggest problem was not being allowed his new favorite pasttime - eating! He's turned into a magician capable of making a bowl of food disappear before you get the lid back on the container. The vet recommended limiting his food for the first day in case he had a reaction. You would think we were starving the poor puppy! What an actor!
That was his last trip to the vet until next year - clipped, chipped and shot. My depleted bank account will be relieved!
The latest other changes for Oz involve his bark and his bite. He's apparently traded in most of his baby teeth and now has a full set of new and very sharp chewing tools. Although he's not currently working on the furniture (that we know of), he continues to express personal affection by chewing on us at every opportunity (sigh!). He's also developed a new and much lower voice for serious business - like protecting the house or greeting cats. Unfortunately, he's also kept that glass-cutting puppy bark that hurts your ears.
Enough of Oz for today - gotta get some work done so I can continue to support his growing addiction to doggy toys. At last count, he has more than a dozen (but still steals the antique teddy bears off the stairs every chance he gets). See ya!
June 21-Robin - only one day later, Oz has apparently put the big "fix" behind him. He woke up this morning in full "monster" mode - wolfed down two bowls of food and then tore around like he was possessed! I'm at work so I escaped, but Kathy will have her hands full! While he was busy, I got the camera out. Here's a few including one of the famous tail, and a couple of Ozzie in his "retriever" mode. He must have some Labrador in him! Cheers! Dave
08/06/07- The Oz (aka, "Squeaky") strikes again! And, yes, he "ate" another piece of furniture, but that's not what this is about. Oz spends much of his time walking around with a squeaky toy hanging out of his mouth, munching (and squeaking). So there I was, having breakfast, when I heard the familiar squeak, squeak sound coming down the hallway. This time when he trotted past me, there was no toy in sight. Turns out, he had ripped one of his toys apart and was walking around with the squeaker tucked into his cheek - a walking, barking squeaky toy. Needless to say, I performed a quick squeakendectomy - after I caught him (which took several trips around the house and two doggie treats! He's getting very good at alluding capture when it suits him. He's also learned the joys of riding in the car and wants to go whenever anyone gets the keys out. He's fine and relatively calm as long as the car is moving - he gets agitated if you stop for more than a minute or two. Don't know what that's about. The other big event this week has been repeated exposure to the felines in the house. One just disappears when Oz shows up. The other, which is about equal in size and weight, decided enough was enough and went on the offensive. The result was Ozzie getting a very thorough (but clawless) beating right on the end of his nose. He's a little a more cautious about approaching that particular cat, at least for now. We plan to continue putting them together until he settles down and they accept that he's not going away. It may take a year or two!
Hope all is well with y'all. Dave
Update! Two more close encounters with the cat people and Oz is demonstrating a whole new form of restraint (not usually his strong suit). After doing his usual head-long bounce up to Dixie (the one that out-weighs him) and getting hissed and growled at, he actually laid down and put on his pitiful whimpering act (the one he uses when he really (really) wants something. He inched forward until they were about 4 inches apart before he couldn't stand it anymore and just had to bark - with predictable results. We'll try again today.
Update 2: Our granddaughters in O'Fallon., Mo., have a new Yorkie-Beagle (!!) puppy, so we took Oz to meet his new cousin (?) who, of course, is 1/10th his size. Oz wanted to play so bad but she was absolutely terrified. Of course, what can you expect from a Yorkie!
Cheers!

Hey Robin!
Hope all is well with your family and pups. Tammy and I thought we would drop you note about our little McDoogle, well not so little anymore (almost 7.5 pounds). He went to his first vet visit in Arizona and they said he is (as they say) "healthy as a horse." He didn't even cry or yelp when they gave him his next round of shots. What a good little boy.
I have attached some pictures from this evening for you to enjoy. We took him to the park and he decided to have some fun in a mud puddle. Needless to say, he needed a little bath afterwards. There is also some before and after shots with a box we gave him to play with and also a family picture. Also, we have registered him with the AKC under the name "Pistol Pete's McDoogle". We thought it was rather appropriate after seeing his lineage.
Other than that, we couldn't be more pleased with him. If you ever need a recommendation, please feel free to give my phone number or email address. I would be happy to provide you a great recommendation.
Thanks again, and best of luck in the future!

Hey Robin,
Hope this emails finds you and your family well. Below you will find some links with the most up to date photos of McDoogle. He is truly an awesome dog. We couldn't be more pleased with him. Everyone loves him as he is incredibly social with people, children and any other dogs. Several weeks ago he completed puppy school and passed with flying colors. He's a pro a sit, down, come and shake, and loves to play with a small frisbee disc that we bought for him. I keep asking Tammy when we are going to get him a friend, but she keeps reminding me on the first couple weeks of sleepless nights when he was a little guy. Oh well, maybe in a year or two. At last check he was 15 pounds, but we think he has put maybe 1 or 2 more on since then.
Enjoy the photos. Have a safe and happy holidays

Dear Robin,
I spoke to Brenda and she gave her ok for you to publicize the info on Pearl. Pearl, who is a June pup from Waylon and Dinah's litter, earned her "Canine Good Citizen" title on May 7th. Pearl will be an adult in June, so it's impressive that she is doing so much at such a young age. I have also included a picture my son took of Pearl during one of our workouts on agility. I do agility with my Cairn. Brenda also takes Pearl to visit at a nearby elderly facility. So I won't be surprised if she also pursues a "therapy dog" title as well. A much larger photo of the one I I attached was given as a gift to Brenda, as well. Brenda also gave her permission to publish the photo of Pearl if you choose to do so. You have my permission, also. If not, enjoy!
She is an excellent agility dog and recently was awarded the title \"canine good citizen\". She is fun and funny and 110% Bichon.

By the way, Pearl has her TDI and we are now doing hospice care. I am
going to check into a few of the local hospitals as well. I'm going to
see if I can get someone to video her running agility. She is great and
very fast.
Blessings,

TDI is Therapy Dogs International.
She passed her TDI test and is now a therapy dog. We are helping with
hospice care and have applied at the local hospitals to bring Pearl in

been visiting the nursing home since I brought her home.

We also have regular "play time" with his best friend Mick, the Wheaten Terrier who lives a couple houses down.
Housetraining is going really well. He is even starting to ring a bell we hung on the door to let us know he needs to go out if we do not notice. Keith has taught him how to "sit" and "lay"and within the next month or so we hope to get him into some obedience classes.
We cannot thank you enough for such a great dog. I don't know if you remember or not but Keith was not exactly a dog lover. Quite often he will say to me as Loudin cocks his head to the side, "How can you not love that little guy?" He has completely fallen in love with him. Just the other day he told me that one day we can get another one so Loudin has a playmate. Who knows, you might see us again for another puppy, we know you guys do a great job.
Thank you again. Keith and I love those doggie kisses we get each day.

Created On: 08.19.07 12:00 pm
Description:
Aug. 12, 2007-Hi, Robin, Ozzie is definitely into air conditioning! He wants to be outside only long enough to take care of business.
I can now report that the Oz has a permanent home - meaning that my spouse won't give him up regardless of what he does (there was some doubt about that for awhile).
Now that he's officially in his second six months, Oz actually shows signs of settling down (slightly). He's not chewing on us (or the furniture) as much, and is being quite civil around the cats (as long as they don't move).
He has a new and somewhat disconcerting behavior though. I have a big screen TV downstairs where I typically watch Cardinals games. Oz waits until I'm settled, watching from the top landing, and then he comes tearing down the stairs and literally throws himself into my lap - ready or not! The first time he did it, he and I both ended up with ice cream on our faces, which may have been his plan all along! What a dog!
Looking back at previous comments, I wanted to let you know that instead of "growing into" his ears as you predicted, the Oz-monster's "antenna" are keeping up and are longer than ever! As you correctly predicted, he continues to get lighter colored and is actually changing color. He now has a pronounced amount of gray on top of his head (to match his tail). He also celebrated his six-month anniversary by officially reaching 16 pounds, so heaven knows what the next six months will bring!
Well, gotta get to work. Hope the heat and the flies both give you some relief. Dave
Aou. 06, 2007-The Oz (aka, "Squeaky") strikes again!
Update 2: Our granddaughters have a new Yorkie-Beagle (!!) puppy, so we took Oz to meet his new cousin (?) who, of course, is 1/10th his size. Oz wanted to play so bad but she was absolutely terrified. Of course, what can you expect from a Yorkie!
Cheers!

I can't remember if I mentioned yet another unusual behavior (at least in my experience with dogs).
Ozzie is the only dog I've known who not only watches TV but has favorite commercials! There is a commercial on these days that has a Great Dane who, towards the end of the commercial, woofs a couple of times. That got Ozzie's attention the first time he heard it, and now whenever that commercial comes on (before the dog appears), he stops whatever he's doing and waits for the big dog. At first, he barked back, but now he just watches. There's also a commercial where a deer walks across the screen and disappears off the left side of the picture. The first time Oz saw that, he went around the end of the TV to see where the deer went. But only once - now he just watches. He also likes commercials with monkeys and cats, but his favorites involve other dogs. What a character! I'm trying to get him interested in NASCAR, but so far, no luck! See ya.

Subject: RE: Hey!
Good to hear from you! Hope all is well in the wilds of Mizzou. I doubt that a "play date" with Ozzie would be good for the Merritt's little guy. Oz plays like a WWF wrestler - lots of tumbling and takedowns! He and Skittle (our daughter's Beagle cross) absolutely terrorized their fellow campers at Camp Bow Wow over the Thanksgiving holiday. We were in Atlanta in a houseful of cats where Ozzie was not welcome and Skittle's family was in Dallas, so they both went to camp. In case you have not heard of these places, Camp Bow Wow is literally camp for dogs. They spend the day running around together (supervised, of course) and at night, have spacious "cabins" with beds rather than cages. It's not cheap but is a great alternative when you have to board a pup. http://www.campbowwowusa.com/ You can even check up on them on line through their "camper cams!" We plan to send Oz to day camp occasionally just to give him time with other dogs, and to let him burn off some of his boundless energy. After four days there, Ozzie was so worn out that he slept for the first two days after Thanksgiving. But he's now back to his usual lovable self, eating like a horse and demanding extra attention. Comparing notes with Denise Merritt, it's amazing how their puppy is demonstrating exactly the same traits as Ozzie at that age - he's like a clone! They are very, very pleased with "Mason."
Question - what's your take on "stripping" for Cairns? As his hair gets longer, matting is becoming a problem and he's getting a bit ornery about the detangling process. A groomer friend of ours says he should be hand stripped and trimmed, but we like the shaggy look. Is stripping necessary?

Subject: RE: Hey!
Hi, Robin. Thanks for your comments on "stripping" which I assumed was mostly for show. Oz may be many things, but a show dog isn't one of them! His matts aren't nearly bad enough to cause problems - little ones on his back legs and under his collar - fairly easy to get out if I give him time to run around when he loses patience with the process. I brush him every other day so they don't get a chance to become a problem.
From what Denise tells me, there are no worries about their pup having sufficient energy. Like Oz, he's pretty much non-stop - including non-stop chewing. She's smiling a bit less when she talks about his chewing, but I keep assuring her it will stop (or at least slow down) in a couple of months.
In retrospect, Oz hasn't really done all that much damage (could have been much worse). There's puppy tracks (teeth marks) on five or six pieces of furniture but only one chair rung is really damaged beyond what I could effectively repair or disguise. As far as cats, that's really their problem. The smaller of the two still bats him on the nose when he gets too rambunctious, but I think she would actually like to play - if only he wasn't so "enthusiastic." They have touched noses and she will stand her ground up to a point. Oz loves to play "chase me" games and can't understand why that strange looking "dog" won't play like his Beagle cousin, Skittle. He walks up to the cats, gets down in his launch position (nose on the floor, rear end up, tail at full wag), barks and runs halfway across the room and then looks back to see where they are. Of course, being cats, they are above such silliness, but every once in a while he gets a reaction. He followed both of them into our bathroom last week and about 30 seconds later, came back out at full gallop with not one but both cats right on his tail, hissing and growling. Pretty funny.
Well, gotta do some work to earn money for more Ozzie toys. Bought him a new frisbie on Sunday and in less than ten minutes, he had torn the center out of it to get the squeaker. Sigh!

Yes, it's true! Our boy has started school! We are attempting to channel his boundless enthusiasm for people and other living things without changing the more charming aspects of his personality. Mission impossible! As his very patient trainer says, "He's a Terrier!" We started classes last week and he's the only Terrier in a class full of docile herding-type dogs. Oz is the one squirming, whimpering with anticipation (at the prospect of more treats), and charging into every exercise without listening to a word anyone says. Sigh! Actually, the trainer is very impressed with him and claims that he is doing much better than most Terriers at this stage. Yeah, right! He does (usually) sit on command, and sometimes even comes when called (but only if he thinks you have a tasty treat.
Regardless, Ozzie is truly the wonder-pup. Despite my wife's initial dismay at his chewing and loud voice, he has become her favorite dog of all time - in fact, I think she likes him a lot better than me!
We are amazed at the way his color continues to change - the top of his head and part of his tail is bright silver; his ears, legs and feet are gray to black mixed, but the rest of him is almost completely blonde! I'll be sending more pictures soon. I guess at 8 months, he's about grown - just topped 16 pounds and seems to have leveled off. He's becoming more and more of a lap dog but still loves running through the house at full tilt, sometimes for no obvious reason. He also has become addicted to riding in the car and if he sees or hears car keys, he's at the door, ready to go.
I believe I told you our daughter got a "Dorkie," a less than impressive choice upon first glance. Ozzie absolutely terrified her the first time they met. I was convinced she was a permanent wimp. Well, at the second meeting, I had to reassess! The Dorkie turned out to have considerable spunk, giving as good as she got in the funniest free-for-all playing I've seen in years. Oz and Skittles (hey, I didn't name her!) ran and tumbled until neither could breathe - and all without any serious biting or other harmful behavior. We now have regular "playdates." Unfortunately, Skittles still isn't reliably house-broken at 5 months. Our daughter calls Ozzie "Einstein" and tells the Dorkie she needs to be more like her "big cousin!"
OK, this is beginning to look like stream-of-conscious writing, so I guess tat's enough. Hope all is well with y'all.
DAVID
Hi, Robin. Good to hear from you. Yesterday was a "down day" for Oz, meaning he spent most of it being a lap dog. His newest activity involves the pond and stream I built in our side yard. It's full of frogs which he loves to chase. One of these days, he's going to end up in the water with them. Despite the fact that he hates being bathed, he has discovered that it's fun to play with the water in the stream. Last night, he couldn't reach one of the waterfalls to bat the water splashing over the rocks, so he just waded into the stream and ended up walking right up the middle (it's only a couple inches deep). Funny to watch.
12/21/07-and Happy Holidays to you! Ozzie sends his usual enthusiastic greetings! The monster (all 19 pounds of him!) got his first look at snow last weekend and then whined to go out every 15 minutes for the next three days. (He has an incredible range of pitiful noises he uses in trying to get his way!) I'm sure you've seen it all before but after an hour of pure Terrier fun (burrowing throught the drifts, jumping like a crazed jackrabbit, eating tons of snow, woofing under his breath at all the snow-covered Christmas decorations), Oz was a sight to behold. It's a good thing he loves to be rolled up in a towel. So far, he's only eaten two treasured decorations, and unlike his Borky (or whatever) cousin, hasn't tried to bite through any wires on the tree! Having sampled various holiday treats (bits and pieces that have fallen on the floor during marathon baking sessions), and smelled chocolate continuously for two weeks now, he's making something of a pest of himself. He's definitely got a sweet tooth and will be joining me on the New Year's diet plan! Hope your holidays are merry and the new year brings health, happiness and prosperity. Dave
p.s. Comparing notes with Denise, it's amazing how strong the Cairn Terrier genes must be. Their "Mason" is a carbon copy of Oz in temperment, behavior (including stubborness) and intelligence. The stories are completely interchangeable. Cheers and thanks as always for helping to put Oz in our lives.

Hi, Robin! It seems impossible, but our boy celebrates his first birthday today. As you will see in these photos, he continues to change color and is now more gray and silver than anything else. We were planning a birthday party to include a romp with his "cousin" Skittles, but it looks like winter weather is going to keep us from making the trip to Missouri or vice versa, so he'll get a birthday bath and one or two more toys to destroy. Hi, Robin. Hope the holiday weekend was good for you and yours. Just a note to tell you that Ozzie just found a very fitting way to earn his kibble (and treats, crackers, and watermelon).
I was having a minor case of apoplexy, thanks to a mole that was busy destroying my flower beds. Saturday morning, I was walking Oz on that side of the house when he suddenly stopped in his tracks and then bounded over to a new mole track through the yard, followed it to near where it ended and started digging like crazy. I pulled him out of the way, grabbed a pitch fork and spent a few minutes perforating the area. Haven't seen any evidence of the mole since! (I would have let Oz continue, but he was tearing up the yard worse than the mole!) Anyway, true to his Terrier heritage, I now have a resident mole hunter. And Ozzie got an extra helping of tasty treats. What a dog!! Check the picture - he's beautiful! Cheers! Dave

Robin -
She arrived right on time - she was howling and barking up a storm until we signed for her - haven't heard a peep out of her since. She is a very happy puppy and adorable....
Thanks.

Hey Robin,
Today is Halloween and Colby (formerly known as Maggie) is doing just great! She experienced her first earthquake last night, a 5.6 one, which is pretty big even for us (she was running around the house crazy about 10 minutes before the quake but rode it out without a worry!)
As of today, we still haven't received any of the puppy paperwork in the mail that you have sent us. We did receive the information that was on the crate (the last shots regarding de-worming and the rabies vaccination), but that's it.
Her visit to the vet went well, she showed no sign of stress from the flight and checked out with flying colors. We are trying crate training which is going well - she is sleeping the whole night through with no crying and no accidents...during the day she enjoys her crate on car rides and goes in on her own sometimes, but she still hasn't got the potty training target 100% yet.
Here's a picture of her adjusting to her hectic lifestyle of toys and walks!

Robin -
Just wanted to give you an update on Colby ( Maggie ). She is such a great dog..she is doing well at 6 mos.. She graduated her puppy training classes with flying colors and is now enrolled in the intermediate classes. She is a quick learner and is now fully housebroken using a potty tray. She has a great character and as you can see - she does get into a little mischief at times - but always plays it off with her innocent "who me" look - even though there is evidence! She has brought us much joy and we couldn't imagine life without her!
Hope all is well with you,
Mike

I hope all is well with all of you.

This Henry -- he's the nuts! Tom has been sleeping in Julie's twin bed; so, I can get back in our bed and actually rest. I shut everyone's doors each morning after I get up, start the coffee, and take Henry out. Well, I haven't been paying attention to Henry when I come back in. The little sly outfit has taken to going in and getting Tom up each morning. It is so CUTE. Tom has even started calling himself Henry's daddy (HA, HA)! He has won us all over.
Henry goes with us to feed. He rides in the pick-up. He's a farm dog. Remember the pet calf -- Blue? Blue goes from his stall to the outdoor arena each morning and back at night. Henry (the cow dog) nips at his heels. It's hysterical. He'll probably have to get rolled to realize he's not so tough.
How big will Henry get? He has already grown so much. I'm afraid he'll get past breed standard.
Love to you all. You are special folks.

Can't begin to tell you just how much this little dog means to us. We love him. He is the perfect big dog in a little package. He goes everywhere with us. The girls refer to him as their little brother. I never would have guessed we would fall in love with a dog this way. He is such a pleasure.
Hope your bunch is doing well. The girls are planning to stop by your place over spring break if we can afford a trip. With gas as high as it is -- I don't know what we'll do. But, we'd enjoy seeing you again. HA -- nothing like inviting yourself over!
I attached a current pic of Henry. I can't remember the last time I took a picture of my girls. But, I've got a current one of my dog. I'm such a bad mother.
Drop a line!!

Description: Hi Robin,
I wanted to write to you to let you know that Kirby is doing well and has really become such a great part of our family. I've attached a few new pictures of him . . . . . as I'm writing this I realize that yesterday was two years since he arrived from his flight from Missouri! He arrived so scared and timid and tiny, and now rules this house and definately knows each of our personalities and how to get his way!
We got Kirby when our youngest left for college and although he's still trying to figure out why Eric and Kristen float in an out of the house on their visits, he loves each one for the person they are. When Kristen comes home from college to visit, she is his playmate that plays with and teases him, and he loves it. Eric, who has since graduated from college and now lives in Maryland, we refer to his "Godfather". He is extremely protective of him and you can see Kirby's excitement and admiration for him each time he comes home for a visit. At the end of a weekend when one of them has visited, Kirby gets very mellow and you can see the sadness in his eyes he missed them very much for the first day or so! Kirby was a gift to me from the family because I wanted a dog for so long, but we all have given a piece of our heart to him . . you can see the contentment on both in the picutre of Greg and Kirby!
In two weeks Greg and I go on vacation and Kirby is going to visit Eric in MD for the week. It will be a great week for both of them and we are very comforted that he be loved and well cared for. (No kennel for our Kirby!)
All my friends that have Broken Spoke Kennel dogs are so happy, I even understand Maddie and her husband got a second! We are so fortunate to have found you on the internet - thank you!!
I hope all is well with you and your family. I'm sure your expansion is complete and hope things are thriving for you.
Best wishes,

I was really glad to see those rabies tags too! Better late than never! Thank you so much for calling the vet to have them sent out to me again.
I really do feel that Pooh is very special. He amazes all of us everyday. He's such a smart little guy. I brought him to my son's classroom because his teacher thought it would be great for all of the kids to see him and they all just loved him. He was so sweet and was letting everyone pet him and he was giving everyone kisses.
I think I mentioned to you before, my son suffered a stroke when he was born. He is severely disabled and can't do much for himself. He cannot speak and needs full care. But when Pooh comes into the room his face just lights up and I have to stop Pooh from giving him too many kisses! Pooh senses that he is "special" and is so gentle with him. He is just the best dog and we are so grateful that we have him.
Thank you so much again for giving us Pooh. I never wanted another dog again after our little dog Milo passed away at the age of 14, two years ago. But we took a chance and got the best dog in the world!
Please take care and I hope the weather gets warmer very soon. I grew up in Chicago but being in California for the last 20 years I am not used to the cold anymore.
I will send you some pictures of Pooh in a few months and you can see how much he has grown. He's such a beauty and our groomer wanted to buy him from me? Can you believe that? He said he has never met such a sweet and gentler dog in all the years he's been in business.
Please take care and I hope you have a great week!

He is getting to know our back yard and our Punkie and was playing with her a bit ago. He runs back to me or Sandy for reassurance.
Did you mail his papers yet? Didn't come in the mail yet. Does he have a metal rabies tag? If not we'll get one from the doctor.

OK, it finally happened! I reached the point where I sincerely wanted to strangle the Oz-monster!
We had house guests and were all getting ready to go out for the evening. The garage door was open and as I went out the kitchen door, Oz saw his opportunity and darted out the door, through the garage and took off down the street! After pleading, warning, and extensive @#$%^!!! didn't slow him down, I took off running to try and catch the little so-and-so -- in dress slacks, sweater and loafers. He got on the golf course, hit the central fairway and never looked back - for more than a half mile! For me, that was a half mile at a dead run on a very wet, mostly muddy golf course. Who knew something with 6-inch legs could go that fast, that far! I thought about letting him go but since he was showing no signs of going anywhere but in a straight line to the next county, and there were cars and coyotes in that direction, I kept going. If he hadn't made a pitstop to fertilize the 8th green, I have no doubt he would still be running - and I would be dead of a heart attack. But nature prevailed and I tackled him while he was otherwise occupied. And then, lacking a leash, I had to carry the struggling, very muddy little stinker all the way back up the hill to the house -- where he went straight to jail for the evening.
Of course, all is now forgiven. From what I hear from the Merritts, Mason is basically an Ozzie-clone and they remain very pleased. Meanwhile, my daughter's Borkie remains obstinately unhousebroken at almost a year old. Kelley calls Ozzie "Einstein" in comparison.
Hope all is well with y'all. Cheers! Dave

Hey! The clip job got postponed for a couple of weeks by the groomer (I think someone warned them about Oz) but he's been rescheduled for this Friday - photos to follow. I've been trying to get a picture of Oz with his new "friend" - our smallest feline has apparently decided on what Reagan and Gorbachev called "detente!" Several times now, I have come into the bedroom to find them stretched out side by side on the bed, but one or both keep moving before I can get a picture. The war is not over by any stretch - he still insists on chasing and she still beats him severely on his nose when she gets tired of it, but the overall relationship is definitely in transition. It's funny because while she will let him get close, if you listen carefully, she keeps that warning growl going, even when she closes her eyes and looks like she's not paying attention. I also discovered the monster's biggest weakness - Wheat Thins! He's absolutely nuts about them and comes running even before I get the box open. He can be asleep upstairs and no matter how quietly I open the pantry door, I can hear him hit the floor before I get the box out. He likes Triscuits and the mini-saltines as well but Wheat Thins are his all-time favorite - much better than doggie treats! I know - it's the salt. Probably not good for either of us. By the way, the new pups are adorable! I'd have another one but my long-suffering better half would kick all three of us out! Looking at the weather map, you probably need a canoe about now, so hope all is well in your neck of the woods! Cheers! Dave

HA - this little guy follows her everywhere. He is like a growth on her side now that she has finally accepted him into her life.
The look on her face here is priceless -
"Look Kid, all I have to do is click on one key, print out your RETURN TO SENDER label and put it on that box you came in!"
He actually got Sophie to play with him the other day. I almost fainted! She was right down there taking his rubber squeaky ball and teasing him with it. She hasn't EVER played with a ball or her brother when he was alive. Eli has brought out the puppy in her at 16 years old!

Hi Robin,
Here's a picture of Eli at our Cabin in Schroon Lake, NY.
Eli thinks that when he's at the top of the stairs and you are coming up
that you have to know the password to get by. LOL
His new thing is growling at you when you come up the steps. Actually, he
plays a little game when you want him to come down. He growls and makes
this funny noise because he doesn't want to come down the stairs. Then
he'll finally decide OK - I'm coming.
He's adorable. Both ears are standing straight up this week. He's been to
the vet twice now and he's doing great. The first time he was 5.2 pounds
for his arrival check up and on Thursday I took him for his Rabies shot and
I think it was distemper. He weighed 6.5 pounds so he is obviously eating.
Ha Ha.
He's been to Connecticut to see Rick's uncle and you'll probably have a
future customer. He just fell in love with Eli.
Talk to you soon!
Cindy
06/16/08-Hi Robin,
How is everything? Well, I just had to give you an update on Eli. He's doing great! He weighs 10 lbs now and is an absolute riot. He has taken over the house and just has us wrapped around his little paw. He's attending puppy school and is the star of the show. He has his "Westie Moments" but in class he is the absolute picture of obedience and pays attention. The trainer uses him as the example because he just listens so well. He will be graduating in three weeks and moving on to advanced companion training. I would like him to earn his companion dog title before he is 6 months old At the rate he is going he will do that. He also will be getting into some agility training after that.
I wanted to send you these pictures of Eli's big adventure. He went on a 10 mile canoe trip with us last weekend and was a total success. He just loved the water and was so good in the canoe. We stopped every 30 minutes so he could run around the beaches. I bought him a life jacket and thank God I put it on him right away. He was very curious about the rapid water when we were loading the canoe and jumped right in and gave me a heart attack. He swam very well and the handle on the jacket came in quite handy as we had to pluck him out of the water several times. Once he found out he liked swimming he kept trying to jump out of the canoe into the water. It was a beautiful day and we just had so much fun.
We just love our puppy and we're so proud of him. I see you have more and it is so tempting to get him a little brother LOL. He just devils Sophie all the time. She really likes him now and does get into playing with him quite a bit. She just rolls her eyes and tells him it's time to take a nap when he gets too rough. They even lay together sometimes. Rick and I are just tickled at his progress.
Enjoy the pictures!
Sincerely,
Cindy and Rick

Hi Robin! Sorry for such a late update! Huck is doing great. He went to the vet last Friday and she said he looked excellent and appeared to be doing well for taking such a long trip. It took a few das but he is now part of the "dog family". Our black lab is great with him, he lets Huck chew on him and boss him around. The other lab is still getting use to him and is finally letting him play ball with her. Everyone that sees him falls in love with him; he a lovebug and such a snuggler. He is already starting to state his claim as head dog and I think it's only a matter of time before he is calling the shots. It's hilarious to watch him get on the bed so that he is eye level with the other dogs and tell them who's in charge, he has a cute "bark". I just love him and am so glad that I got him from you. I have attached some pictures. Thank you so much and I will keep you updated!

Dear Robin and Gary,
In the picture of the three dogs together, the large one in the front is the youngest, Beau....the one chomping on him is Frankie (Marie's dog) and the smaller dog in the back is Casey.
In the other picture....that's Peggy with Molly on her head and the other three in her lap! Beau is the biggest of all of them and Casey is the smallest. Beau is 32 pounds and the sweetest, most lovable bichon on earth! Everyone calls his a cuddly white polar bear but we tell them, as far as we know, there are no polar bears in Missouri!
We all had a great time. The dogs ran and played all day long. Your boys and one little girl are all getting the best homes and wonderful care. They are all loved, cared for and happy but that's largely because they came to us that way (from you). We keep telling everyone they need to buy a second bichon because it's actually easier to have two because they take care and entertain each other.

I attached a funny picture. He loves playing with Codys rabbit (Cody was our American Eskimo that passed away in January of this year). He played so hard that he just fell asleep right on his back. He was near the rabbit when he did that so it looked like he lost the battle. I think it was a Knock out for sure and the rabbit won!

Hi Robin!
So great to hear from you! Wow, Ike hit you pretty hard. We were hit hard too but we had NO rain at all but many people in Cincinnati are still without power after 5 days. We were lucky.. the power came back on for us just 6 hours later. Hope you are all ok soon.
We renamed little Otis to Baxter. It was quite a debate in our family since I thought he looked just like an Otis. Our granddaughter was very adamant about him being called Otis. But Dad won out and he is now Baxter. He looks like a Baxter too.
I have attached a few more pictures of our little guy. We just love him so much. He is soooo very friendly and loves dogs and people. I took him to a local dog park and he ran with the Big Dogs.. literally. He wasnt afraid at all until two big labs decided to run after him. He found a good hideaway under the park bench.
We will keep in touch. Take care both of you.

I am so excited. She has one more certification to pass before she can be a therapy dog so she can share her joy with even more people!
She is such a happy little girl and so full of love for EVERYbody!
I need to start carrying your website address with me, because everywhere she goes, people ask where I got her. I know I still owe you some pictures and I will get them to you.
Will let you go for now; my nieces and nephews are coming over with their parents and my mom to celebrate Carson's big accomplishment!

with his best friend Bella, our Lab. They play
constantly and get along great! So great we have had
people ask what we did! He had his first trip on the
boat today and his first swim in the salt water! He
has a matching life vest with Bella and they played
and had a ball! He is our feisty little man and we
love him! Thank you so much!

Hi, Robin. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods. We're doing OK - not looking forward to winter, but enjoying the current fall weather. Ozzie, too! He's into his favorite fall pasttime - chasing leaves. We had another one of those "Ozzie" moments this week. About a year ago, I tried to teach him to shake hands - but with zero success. All he wanted to do was grab my hand and chew on it. So, this past week, he was sitting, facing me and for some reason, I stuck my hand out and said "shake." Ozzie cocked his head with one of those "what now?" looks but after about 10 seconds, he stuck out his left paw. I chalked it up to coincidence, patted him on the head and told him he was a good puppy. Later in the day, I tried it again, and same thing - a lengthy pause while he thought about it, and up came the left paw. He repeated it again last night, so I'm now convinced it isn't just coincidence. And he's definitely a lefty! But, wow! It was actually more than a year ago that I tried to teach him that, and to the best of my knowledge, no one has asked him to shake in the meantime. Like I said, another one of those "Ozzie" moments. He also got loose again this week but - miracle of miracles - he stopped and came to me when I called him. Of course, that was only because he hadn't had time to notice the Black Lab across the street before I caught up with him. He continues to be the light of our lives, although Kathy is still ready to throttle him over the daytime barking at everyone and everything (particularly joggers). If we ever get a handle on that, he will be the perfect dog. Doubt that's going to happen anytime soon, though. Let me know how you are doing. Dave

Hi Robin-
I just wanted to send along a photo of Sailor at Christmastime. We really love him and he has such a fun personality. He definitely can be a little rascal but we are having so much fun with him. He loves to go on walks, sleep on the bed (yes, he's spoiled) and pull things out of the recycling to chew on. :-)
I hope all is well in your new home! We may want a little buddy for Sailor someday and will definitely get one from you! :-)
Love, Kamala, Oliver and Sailor

Hi Robin,
This is Stacy. This is my work email.
I wanted to send you a few pictures of Duncan. The second picture is Duncan and Mackie. Mackie is my parent’s cairn, who is a month older.
They have so much fun together. They are so entertaining to watch.
I can’t tell you enough how much we love him. He is just the best puppy. He has been fully potty trained for about 2 months now. Very quick learner. He can sit, and sit up on his behind. I am working on the giving the paw now. Jon and I just love him so much. We have tons of fun with him everyday.
Thank you again for bringing him to us!
Hope all is well there.

Name: Annie Mae
Created On: 03.22.09 12:23 pm
Description: Hello Robin,
We just wanted you to know how much we adore Annie. We kept the nickname you gave her - it fits her. She has Mindy's middle name "Mae."
Attached are some pictures we took the first night we brought her home. There's a picture of her with a pig that used to be Mindy's. The next morning she was attacking it and dragging it all over the house by its ear. She runs through the house so fast, we can't keep up with her. She such a busy, curious little thing.
She's only had 2 accidents in the house, which is unbelievable being that she's only 8 weeks old! We keep her in the kitchen at night and she sleeps in her little bed. When we hear her cry in the middle of the night we take her outside, she does her business, and usually goes right back to sleep until about 4 or 5 in the morning.
Annie has really helped to ease the pain of the loss of our Mindy Mae. I can already tell Annie is a special little dog, just as Mindy was.
I'll be sending more pictures and keep you up to date as she grows.
Thanks for such a beautiful little puppy.

Questions/Comments: Robin, I wanted to apologize for the delay in getting back with you about how absolutely WONDERFUL LeeLoo has been. We have been very busy for the last six weeks and that has been the delay in back with you. The vet where we have taken her has fallen in love with her. Even the groomers want to just play with her all day long. I have no day that we are not outside playing with her that people do not stop and tell me what a cute puppy she is. She is extremely intellegent and has learned so much from the short time that she has been here. I hope to get you some better pictures now that I have a better camera. I hope that you have a wonderful week and thank you so much for a great puppy. Love, Marti and the Strickler Family
Name: Rico / Formerly Sam The Cairn Terrier

Description: What a little character we have here with the addition to our family!
On the first day, this little guy was going up the stairs... now he goes up and down like a yo-yo. He's not even as tall as the first step but he manages to skip up the stairs with ease. Going down is a little more work, but he gets it. He is keeping Jake in line -- doesn't let Jake bully him around at all and stands up for himself. It seems to put them on pretty even footing around the house and they will spend quite a bit of time running around, chasing each other and rolling around in the yard. We couldn't find Rico (aka Sam) the first night and didn't know where he had gone off too. We thought maybe he was hiding behind a couch or something. Then we heard the doggie door shut and he was outside going to the bathroom. Only a few minor accidents inside which we were prepared for -- but we definitely weren't prepared for such a smart, cute, funny little creature!
Just keeping you up to date on the Adventures of Rico! :)
Hope you are having a great weekend!
